Securing environments and global food systems is central to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); specifically, SDG 1& SDG 2 on ending extreme poverty and hunger, especially among vulnerable populations; SDG 13 on strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity of nations and communities to climate-related hazards and natural disasters; and SDG 15, which emphasizes conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems. In addition, efforts aimed at attaining sustainable environments and food sovereignty are key in realizing the Aspiration 1 of African Union Agenda 2063 on ensuring the preservation of healthy environment and ecosystems, and climate resilient economies and communities, as well as the 2014 Malabo declaration of ending hunger, enhancing resilience of livelihoods and production systems, and ensuring that agriculture contributes significantly to poverty reduction. The contemporary problems of climate change, land degradation and consequent loss of livelihoods, food insecurity and rise in poverty have direct linkage to anthropogenic activities associated with unsustainable land use practices, land tenure change, which are exacerbated by unsupportive policies. The pressing need to build resilience of the vulnerable ecosystems and food systems towards global sustainability has necessitated global adoption of interventions aimed at improving environmental condition, agricultural productivity and food security, as well as mitigating and adapting to climate change. However, such interventions require empirical evidence base to ensure development decisions are not only demand –led but also relevant and appropriate to the intended situations. It is against this background that iDEA was established to provide consultancies services to generate evidence to guide policies, practice and investments; and build human resource capacity for posterity. iDEA offers an array of consultancy services, among others, baseline surveys; monitoring and evaluations; environmental impact assessment and audit; training on database management; organization and facilitation of training seminars and workshops; training on development of data collection tools and research protocol; as well as general research and outreach to inform both practice and policy.

To be a leading centre for innovative solutions for achieving sustainable environment, development, food systems in the Africa.

To maintain leadership role in the pursuit of resilient environments and livelihoods through demand-led and quality research, training, consultancy and stewardship.

iDEA endeavours to:
i. Uphold professionalism, integrity and honesty in all activities.
ii. Promote evidence-based development investments and policy processes in environment and food systems.
iii. Foster strong networks and partnerships with all stakeholders in the field of development, environment, agriculture and pastoralism.

Environmental degradation and loss of land productivity are at the centre of the observed loss of livelihoods, poverty and food insecurity among the rural populace in Africa. These problems are exacerbated by the contemporary biophysical and socio-economic change dynamics occasioned by the biggest development challenge of the 21st century, the changing climate. Most of the current development interventions are geared towards restoring environmental integrity and enhancing agricultural productivity and food security in a bid to build resilience of the vulnerable ecosystems and livelihoods.Such responses require empirical evidence base to ensure development decisions are not only demand –led but also relevant and appropriate to the intended situations.

It is against this background that iDEA was established to provide consultancies services to generate evidence to guide policies and investments; and build capacity of farmers, students, government and development agencies for posterity.  iDEA offers an array of consultancy services, among others, baseline surveys; monitoring and evaluations; environmental impact assessment and audit; training of database management; organization and facilitation of training seminars and workshops; training in development of data collection tools and research protocol.
